Brief historic reference


The Odessa National Polytechnic University, one of the oldest engineering training institutions in Ukraine, was founded in 1918. During years of its existence the Odessa polytechnics contributed significantly into development of the Ukrainian and global science and technology as well as in training skilled experts for the national economy.

In XX century 30ths the Odessa polytechnics became the essential center in the southern Ukraine as to national economy updating with a new technical basis. Here were solved many engineering problems, actual for state’s industry and transport.

Years running the Odessa polytechnic institute, well-known and prestigious higher educational establishment, gave rise to the Odessa National Marine University, the Odessa National Communication Academy, the Odessa State Economical University, the Odessa State Academy of Civil Building and Architecture. Even the Odessa State Agrarian University came into life as one of the Odessa polytechnics' faculties. When evacuated during World War II, the Odessa polytechnic institute constituted the basis for creating the Penza State Technical University, as known nowadays. And in 60ths the Sevastopol branch of Odessa Polytechnic institute has been transformed growing into Technical University sound today as the Sevastopol National one.

The arduous years of Great Patriotic War demonstrated an extreme heroism of our teaching staff and students on the batllefields, at the same time that the self-sacrificing labor at the homefronts. 24 hours-round the institute’s workshops and laboratories worked inspired again and again with the slogan: "Everything for batllefront, everything for the sake of Victory! »

Functioning before as Industrial Institute in 1945 the future ONPU has been restructured into a polytechnic higher educational institution, which during post-war period unceasingly solved much important scientific and economical problems.

In 1968 the Odessa polytechnic institute’s achievements in professional staff training as well as scientific researches development were rewarded upon, the Decree of the Ukrainian SSR Supreme Council Presidium, with an Honour Diploma.

In 1971 the Odessa polytechnic institute’s merits in training skilled experts for national economy and scientific researches development were rewarded with a Chart and the Labour Red Banner Order upon the Decree of the Ukrainian SSR Supreme Council Presidium.

In 1977 the prominent successes of the Odessa polytechnic institute’s staff resulted in positioning among the Republican Eminent Top Ranks, upon Ukrainian SSR Chamber of Ministers’ resolution and the Republican Council of professional committees decision.

The enactment of the Ukraine Council of Ministers № 646 dated 13.08.1993 prescribed changing the Odessa polytechnic institute into the Odessa State Polytechnic University. The same year on OSPU basis there was created an educational complex «Polytechnic university» consolidating numerous licea, high schools, colleges, and technical schools not only of Odessa city, but from the whole Southern Ukraine region. 20 thousands of students, graduate employees, post-graduate students are trained here, the process being effected by personnel numbering 4 thousands lecturers, researchers and practical engineers. There are 57 academicians and corresponding members of National both special Ukraine Academies of Science, more than 120 Professors and Doctors of sciences, almost 450 senior lecturers, Ph.D., 21 honoured workers of Science & Engineering of Ukraine, a deserved worker of the National Education of Ukraine, 50 honoured workers of Ukraine.

On September, 16th, 1998 the Odessa State Polytechnic University staff was rewarded with the Honour Diploma of the Ukraine Chamber of Ministers and a memorable decoration for essential contribution in training highly skilled engineering personnel, scientific developments, progressive technical and technological achievements.

By the Decree of the President of Ukraine № 591 dated 07.08.2001 the University has been attributed the status of a National-level higher educational institution.

Today the structure of the Odessa National Polytechnic University (ONPU) includes: 8 Institutes specialized in main educational and scientific fields (machine-building; industrial technologies, design and management; power; radio electronics and telecommunications; computer systems; business, economy and information technologies; electromechanics and energy consumption; joint Ukrainian-Germane programs studies), 2 faculties (chemicals technology; humanities), and the 3 purely educational institutes (preuniversity cycle domestic courses; extramural education; foreign students’ preuniversity cycle), postgraduate training center, Kherson polytechnic college, Automotive equipment and roads-building college.

ONPU provides training of more than 15 000 students in 56 specialties.

By the results of International Personnel Academy and Ukraine Academy of Pedagogy rating (issue compared: 413 national higher educational institutions of all patterns of ownership), the Odessa National Polytechnic University holds the 18th rank and these last five years it enters to the Ten Top from among the Ukraine technical and technological higher educational institutions.

High quality in scientific and pedagogical structure, an extensive material base, modern methods of teaching and information technologies implemented truly tribute to the Odessa National Polytechnic University the role of leader not only in Southern region, but across the whole country.

The university has powerful research basis, its practical engineers, researchers and scientists of university essentially contributed into different areas of science and technology. Developments and achievements of scientific researching schools initiated by fundamental and applied science experts having along different years worked at the university, as well as successes due to those continuing their researches within the ONPU precincts today, are widely known to scientific community. Impossible would be completing the full list, but even these several below represent clear evidence of rich scientific tradition in ONPU: the Nobel Prize winner, academician Tamm I.E.; Heroes of Socialist Work: Atroshchenko V.I., Boreskov G.K., Korchagina V.I., Nudelman A.E.; laureates Azhogin V.V., Barab-Tarle A.I., Gutenmaher L.I., Dashchenko A.F., Mandelshtam L.I., Matveenko M.M., Mahlin B.A.'s State Prize winners, Panov L.I., Papaleksi N.D., Prister B.S., Sevtcov A.I., Stashko A.J., Usov A.V., Shojhet F.M., Yakimov А.V.

The 15 specialized research laboratories do implement researches in high-priority scientific domains: resources saving, environmental protection, fundamental researches in mathematics, mechanics, computer science, new materials, automation and instrument making, etc.

ONPU stable long-term international scientific and technical cooperation links created high reputation of "Polytechnics" abroad. The university develops reliable promising collaborative contacts to UNESCO headquarters and Directorate, the European center of higher education, General agency of the international educational programs. Today ONPU efficiently cooperates with educational, scientific and industrial centers at 20 foreign countries. 2000 year running there began the activity of UNESCO Chair at OSPU.

The Odessa National Polytechnic University is the member of the European University Association and the International Association of Universities. It dignitly represents our country in the market of world higher education.

While establishing, strengthening and affirming its contemporary position, ONPU trained more than 90 thousand engineers for different branches of the national economy, and about 4 thousand experts for 102 countries worldwide.

Across different periods, from just the date of establishing up to present day, ONPU Rectors list numbers 18 persons. They led the University personnel throughout happy and severe times; due to that team spirit the staff reached to succeed everything we are proud for today. These are their names: professors Nilus A.A., Timchenko I.J. having laid the university foundations in 1918 - 1921; professor Suslov G.K.; engineers Rozenfeld M.F., Perederij I.J., Shmukler A.D., Gurvich N.Z., Tyagnibeda L.F., Belenkiy S.N. who built our modern activity backgrounds since 1921 till 1941; engineers Volohovich M.F., Berezko S.P., Kobelev M.P. who retained and conserved the university during Great Patriotic war; professor Dobrovolsky V.A. who since 1945 reconstructed and developed the university; academician Yampolsky S.M. and professors Kovalenko K.S., Zablonsky K.I., Azhogin V.V. who since 1957 till 1985 carried out the university upgrading and development within territory it borrows today.

From 1987 to 2010, came to leading position during reorganization and the Ukrainian state establishing period, the university administrative headed by the Rector Academician Malakhov V.P.
